Welcome back!
We hope that you enjoyed your summer and that you are excited and gearing up for the 2024-2025 academic year! Classes for the fall semester begin today, Monday, August 19th.
We have an addition to the leadership of the Counseling Program due to enrollment and the needs of our Program. Dr. Peggy Whiting and Dr. Helen Lupton-Smith are co-coordinators of the Counseling Program.
Welcome Dr. Malaika Edwards
The Counselor Education Program at North Carolina Central University is pleased to announce the hiring of a new faculty member: Dr. Malaika Edwards.
Dr. Malaika Edwards is an Assistant Professor in the Counselor Education Program at North Carolina Central University and the Clinic Director for the Eagle Counseling, Consultation, and Research Clinic (ECCRC). She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education from North Carolina State University and her Master of Science degree from Northeastern University in Boston, MA.
Dr. Edwards began her time with NCCU as the Clinic Director for ECCRC and served as an adjunct faculty member. Before joining NCCU, she was a Doctoral Student Center Coordinator for Community Counseling, Education, and Research Center and the Outpatient Therapy Director for V.O.I.C.E. Therapeutic Solutions, both in Raleigh, NC. She is a licensed clinical mental health counselor with experience conducting therapy and clinical assessments across diverse populations in research, private practice, and community mental health settings. Dr. Edwards’ research and practice interests include increasing access to mental health services for historically marginalized and minoritized communities, as well as the informing and training of emerging counselors through deconstructing the history of the DSM from an anti-oppressive lens; the application of clinical diagnoses in historically marginalized and/or minoritized populations; and the incorporation of self-awareness and multicultural approaches to the teaching and utilization of clinical interventions.
Counseling Fellowships - Please Apply
The NBCC Foundation is pleased to announce the application period for the 2024 National Board for Certified Counselors Minority Fellowship Program (NBCC MFP).
Up to 95 doctoral- and master’s-level counseling fellowships are available for current counseling students.
Fellowship award amounts range from $12,000 to $22,000 and include fellowships in the following categories:
- Up to 20 doctoral fellowships for counselor education and supervision students
- Up to 32 master's fellowships for mental health counseling students
- Up to 43 master's fellowships for addictions counseling students
The MFP is made possible by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and is administered by the NBCC Foundation. The MFP for addictions counseling fellowships are administered by the NBCC Foundation in collaboration with NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals.
