My name is Crystal Small and I am a Middle School Counselor at Central Park School for Children in Durham NC.  I am also a graduate of NCCU Counseling Department class of 2004.  I am attaching a flyer to announce our open Internship Positions for both the Elementary and Middle School for the 2022-2023 school year.  Our school is a progressive school in the heart of Downtown Durham with a mission that “ALL CHilDREN THRIVE IN A COMMUNITY ROOTED IN JUSTICE AND EQUITY.  If you have any students who would be interested in an internship opportunity, please feel free to have them contact me at This email address is being protected from spambots. Internship Opportunity

At Central Park, Graduate Interns:

  • Will be offered supervised individual and group therapy as well as treatment and collaborating with the care team to ensure that students are receiving quality mental health care.

  • Provided flexible hours and case load determined by the hours of the school program. 

  • Will be given an array of field experience that will effectively meet their learning needs related to engagement, assessment, interviewing, basic casework etc.

  • Will be expected to have flexibility to accommodate program needs and are required to complete administrative tasks as associated with their placement functions. 

  • Will help build a community resource list by attending community meetings such as Community Collaborative to present to the Care Team.

  • Tasks include working with School Counselors and School Social Worker to coordinate group sessions for students that will  focus on common issues such as Organization skills, Stress, Anxiety, Bullying, etc. 

  •  Learn about the English as Second Language(ESL), Exceptional Children (EC) programs, and behavioral approaches for the students served through these departments .

  • Will be willing to observe and participate in meetings with School Based Therapy providers for exposure to services offered.

  • Will learn and improve oral and written communication and engagement skills.

  • Will have the ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality and adhere to program regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Must have excellent organizational skills, computer skills and have experience with team building.
