Student Newsletter
Welcome Back to School!
Please be aware that there are synchronous and asynchronous courses this fall.
- Synchronous: All students are online at the same time.
- Asynchronous: Students do not have to be online at the same time.
If a class is synchronous, there will be a specific day and time listed on BANNER. If you registered for a synchronous course, you are required to be present during each and every class day and time. Synchronous classes meet every week on the same day at the same time. If you cannot commit to the class meeting times, please do not register for the course. You will need to develop a different plan with your advisor.
Some may be wondering if there are any in-person, on-campus courses this fall. As a program, we needed to develop and post our schedule in early January 2021. At that time, we decided to remain fully online for the fall semester. Once the schedule was set, and people began making plans and registering, we could not alter delivery methods. We have a mixture of on-campus and online students in a majority of our sections. Students in the online versions of our programs can not take on-campus courses, so we can not change an online course to an in-person course at this time. Therefore, we will remain fully online this fall. We do not yet know what things may look like for the spring semester.
Do You Plan on Graduating this Fall Semester?
If so, please submit your Application for Graduation to your advisor by 5pm on Wednesday, August 25th. Make sure that you follow the instructions for completing this form. It must be typed. A blank copy of the form (with instructions) is found in the forms area on the student branch of the Program's website:

Departmental Name Change
Our department has been known in recent years as the Department of Allied Professions. Starting this academic year, we have changed our name to the Department of Counseling and Higher Education.
As you probably know, we are part of the School of Education at NCCU. There are two departments within the School of Education: (1) Curriculum and Instruction and (2) Counseling and Higher Education.
This change accurately reflects the two programs that are housed within our department (the Counselor Education Program and the Higher Education Administration Program). Please be patient as things get changed across the University. Sometimes you may see "Allied Professions" and sometimes you may see "Counseling and Higher Education". As a recipient of this newsletter, you are a student or alum of the Counselor Education Program. This (the program name) is unchanged.
Are you in Practicum or Internship this Fall?
Make sure that your site supervisor is aware that we are hosting a virtual orientation meeting for all field site supervisors on Friday, August 27th at 3pm.
Pursuing a Second Degree - Changes Ahead
For students who are graduating Spring 2022 or later, you MUST complete a minimum of 18 semester hours above and beyond your original plan of study in order to receive a second degree. There are very specific courses that must be completed to receive a second degree, and these are specified on this page: http://www.nccucounseling.com/student2/index.php/advising/dual-major
Please note that your second internship must consist of a 600-hour placement. In other words, students receiving a second degree will complete a second 600-hour internship placement (600 hours for their first major, 600 hours for their second major).
Please speak with your advisor if you have any questions.
