Image of Doctor Malaika EdwardsThe Counselor Education Program at North Carolina Central University is pleased to announce the hiring of a new faculty member: Dr. Malaika Edwards.

Dr. Malaika Edwards is an Assistant Professor in the Counselor Education Program at North Carolina Central University and the Clinic Director for the Eagle Counseling, Consultation, and Research Clinic (ECCRC). She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education from North Carolina State University and her Master of Science degree from Northeastern University in Boston, MA.

Dr. Edwards began her time with NCCU as the Clinic Director for ECCRC and served as an adjunct faculty member. Before joining NCCU, she was a Doctoral Student Center Coordinator for Community Counseling, Education, and Research Center and the Outpatient Therapy Director for V.O.I.C.E. Therapeutic Solutions, both in Raleigh, NC. She is a licensed clinical mental health counselor with experience conducting therapy and clinical assessments across diverse populations in research, private practice, and community mental health settings. Dr. Edwards’ research and practice interests include increasing access to mental health services for historically marginalized and minoritized communities, as well as the informing and training of emerging counselors through deconstructing the history of the DSM from an anti-oppressive lens; the application of clinical diagnoses in historically marginalized and/or minoritized populations; and the incorporation of self-awareness and multicultural approaches to the teaching and utilization of clinical interventions.
